"To improve, compare little things. To be miserable, compare big things."
- James Clear
Have you ever been caught in the comparison trap? I have, and it smarts. This quote from James Clear frames, perfectly, what we should and should not be comparing.
What's the difference between little things and big things for youth pastors?
Little things
youth group check in strategies
social media tactics
preaching technique
Big things
size of youth groups
salaries
callings
James Clear goes on to say, "Comparison is the thief of joy when applied broadly, but the teacher of skills when applied narrowly."
Comparing little things can help us get better. Comparing big things cause us to ask unanswerable questions, "Why them and not me?"
The Apostle Paul says, "Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding." 2 Corinthians 10:12
Stay away from classifying, comparing and measuring yourself against others.
You are one of one. Unique.
Keep in mind, someone wishes they had it as good as you do.
May your joy be full and your summer be awesome!
Paul
P.S. If you're in a text group with some other youth pastors, they may need to heart this so feel free to share this newsletter with them.
